You Better Look After Those AirPods Pro 3 — because There's No Way You'll Be Able to Repair Them
The AirPods Pro 3 maintain Apple’s nine-year trend of sealed, glued components, scoring 0/10 on repairability despite new features, according to iFixit’s teardown.
- Last month, Apple Inc. launched the AirPods Pro 3 alongside the iPhone 17 series, and iFixit, repair advocacy group, scored the earbuds 0/10 for repairability.
- Because parts are bonded with glue, iFixit found glued batteries and sealed housings require specialized heat tools and delicate prying, making repairs destructive and resealing nearly impossible on the Pro 3.
- Feature-Wise, the Pro 3 gains IP57, foam tips and heart-rate tracking, plus a single 1.334Wh single-cell battery and magnets repositioned for MagSafe/Qi2, yet iFixit said these don’t improve repairability.
- Environmental impact is immediate, with millions ending up in landfills as most recyclers can’t process AirPods, leaving Apple take-back program and replacement routes as the only options for users.
- Right-to-Repair rules are increasingly pressing manufacturers as AirPods continue a nine-year streak of unserviceable designs despite rivals like Fairphone, Sony and Bose offering more repairable options.
