U.S. Air Force Names CCAs as FQ-42 “Vengeance” and FQ-44 “Fury”
The service says the drones will fly with crewed fighters and extend combat reach as production begins and autonomy contracts move forward.
- On Monday, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink announced the service will field at least 500 Collaborative Combat Aircraft by 2032, naming the two initial platforms FQ-42 "Vengeance" and FQ-44 "Fury" during the Air & Space Forces Association's conference.
- Designed to support crewed aircraft, these drones act as "loyal wingmen," and the service significantly increased its planned fleet size from over 150 aircraft previously targeted to 500 by 2032.
- Anduril Industries demonstrated a complete kill chain with the FQ-44A Fury in July, using Lattice AI-infused software to launch an AIM-120 missile against a simulated target at Edwards Air Force Base.
- Alongside the CCA program, the Air Force is accelerating the Massed Modular Aircraft effort to replace its MQ-9 Reaper fleet, with Meink stating the service intends to field 100 MMAs by 2029.
- The service requested $2.37 billion for the CCA program in its fiscal 2027 budget, while future testing will prioritize "quarterback integration" to enable crewed fighters to directly task autonomous assets.
