Air Canada targets global growth with new routes, while U.S. travel demand still sags
The airline said the expansion will make it the second-largest North American carrier by overseas destinations served and add routes to five new cities.
On Thursday, Air Canada announced seven new international routes launching in summer 2027, expanding service to Guangzhou, Oslo, Dubrovnik, Basel, and Shannon. The expansion cements the airline's status as the second-largest North American carrier by global destinations served.
Chief Commercial Officer Mark Galardo framed the move as a push to become a "true global" carrier, aiming to reduce domestic reliance by attracting premium passengers on high-margin international routes. Canada will serve as a major transit hub between the Americas and Europe.
Driving this growth are new long-range Airbus A321 and Boeing 787 aircraft, though major delivery delays have hampered their rollout . New destinations include Guangzhou, Oslo, Dubrovnik, Basel, and Shannon, alongside added service to Nice and Guatemala City.
Rising jet fuel costs tied to the Iran war present significant headwinds for the carrier. Simultaneously, Air Canada navigates a prolonged plunge in Canadian demand for U.S. travel, pressuring the company to diversify revenue sources beyond domestic markets.
Future network announcements are expected as additional aircraft arrive in the coming months. This expansion reinforces Air Canada's commitment to bridging six inhabited continents via Canadian hubs, supporting long-term trade and employment growth.
