The United Nations established a global forum and an independent scientific panel to manage AI risks including pandemics and disinformation, with 40 experts to be recruited, officials said.

  • Last month, the U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution to create a global forum and an independent scientific panel of experts, marking the biggest effort to rein in AI.

  • On Thursday, the U.N. Security Council will hold an open debate on ensuring AI's responsible use under international law and supporting peace processes and conflict prevention.
  • Ahead of the meeting, influential experts urged governments to set red lines and minimum guardrails by the end of next year to address risks like engineered pandemics and large-scale disinformation.
