AI Is Quietly Wiping Out Entry-Level Jobs, Experts Warn

Open University's 2026 Business Barometer report found 51% of 1,500 U.K. business leaders changed hiring practices due to AI, with 19% reducing entry-level recruitment as generative tools handle tasks traditionally assigned to junior employees.
Lucy Beaumont, global SVP of product at talent assessment firm SHL in Surrey, England, notes organizational charts are shifting from pyramids to 'diamonds,' with more mid-level staff and fewer entry-level roles serving as traditional training grounds.
A working paper titled 'Graduating into Disruption: Labor Market Outcomes for AI-Exposed College Majors' shows initial employment likelihood for the most AI-exposed majors declined by five percentage points, while earnings fell 13 percent since late 2022.
Founder Tobias Green of London-based ad agency Catalyst calls the shift 'a reverse Mechanical Turk,' where AI handles research and copy while junior employees oversee the process, allowing one worker to manage five client accounts.
Beaumont warned that removing entry-level 'training wheels' has serious implications for every rung of the corporate ladder, as young workers lose opportunities to make mistakes and build judgment in a controlled environment.
