Afrobeats' Tiwa Savage nurtures Africa's future talent
Savage’s foundation will train 100 artists for free and award 18 Berklee scholarships worth $2.1 million.
Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage recently launched a free training program for 100 young artists in Lagos, partnering with the Berklee College of Music to provide instrumental workshops and masterclasses.
After seeing few African students at the East Coast American college, Savage established the foundation to address what she termed a critical gap: "The problem is access-- access to education, music education in particular."
Berklee tutors are conducting vocal drills at the Muson Centre, while 18 students received scholarships worth $2.1 million following a concert at the National Theatre.
Student Aliyu Olukoya called the experience "amazing," while singer Irene Ugwuorah described her selection as a "great opportunity," reflecting immediate positive reception among participants.
Savage intends to expand the foundation across Africa, expressing hope that a recipient will become the "next Michael Jackson, the next Quincy Jones, the next Wizkid," insisting the industry is "too good to just compete locally.
