African swine fever detected at pig breeding unit in Kerala's Thrissur

Authorities imposed a 1-km infected zone and a 10-km surveillance zone after laboratory tests confirmed African swine fever at a government pig unit.

  • On Monday, officials in Thrissur, Kerala, confirmed African swine fever at the Animal Husbandry Department's Pig Breeding Unit in Kunnamkulam. The district administration declared a one-kilometre infected zone and a 10-kilometre surveillance zone.
  • District Collector Shikha Surendran directed authorities to regulate pig movement and pork distribution following the outbreak. A Rapid Response Team was formed to coordinate disease-control measures, with restrictions effective since Sunday, August 9, under the National Action Plan.
  • The Animal Husbandry Department issued strict biosecurity guidelines requiring farmers to restrict visitor access and disinfect equipment. If swill feeding occurs, leftovers must be boiled for at least 20 minutes before being given to pigs.
  • Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Isaac Sam emphasized that African swine fever affects only pigs and does not spread to humans or other domestic animals. Officials stated there is no cause for public concern.
  • Farmers must immediately report any abnormal symptoms or sudden pig deaths to the nearest government veterinary hospital. Newly introduced pigs should remain separated from the main herd for at least three weeks to ensure no disease symptoms.
