Air Cargo Demand Climbs 4.4% as Airlines Face Soaring Fuel Costs Ahead of Peak Season
IATA said stronger manufacturing and trade offset higher fuel costs, while the global cargo load factor rose 2 percentage points to 46%.
- Global air cargo demand increased 4.4 per cent year-on-year in August, according to the International Air Transport Association, with all regions reporting growth despite total capacity falling 0.1 per cent.
- North American carriers recorded the strongest regional performance with 6.6 per cent demand growth despite capacity falling 2.5 per cent, while European airlines achieved the industry's highest cargo load factor at 53 per cent.
- The Asia–North America corridor recorded the strongest trade-lane growth at 13.2 per cent for its seventh consecutive month, while Gulf-linked routes faced disruption with cargo demand between Europe and The Middle East falling 12.1 per cent.
- IATA senior vice president for sustainability and chief economist Marie Owens Thomsen said "strong demand and higher load factors helped airlines to recoup some of the exceptionally high fuel costs." Yields rose month-on-month for the first time since April.
- Manufacturing activity strengthened in August as The Global Manufacturing Output Purchasing Managers and New Export Orders Index both rose. Owens Thomsen noted these "positive signs as the year-end peak season comes into view.
