U-Haul Migration Report: Why Younger Generations Are Moving to Texas
Gen Z movers favor Texas for colleges, entry-level jobs and apartments, and U-Haul said Texas metros accounted for several of the top destination rankings.
On July 29, the U-Haul 2026 Midyear Migration Report identified Texas as a top net-gain state for Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z, while Baby Boomers continue favoring the Southeast.
Analyzing 52 weeks of rental data from July 2025 through June 2026, the company says a renter's stage of life plays a 'vital role in where their moving truck, trailer, or U-Box moving container is going.'
Dallas-Fort Worth ranked as the nation's top net-gain metro area for Millennials and second for Gen Z, while Houston and Austin also placed among top destinations for younger movers.
Florida uniquely maintains a top-10 net gain across all four generations, while Texas remains a leading choice for younger age groups, excluding only Baby Boomers.
Colorado also serves as a significant draw, ranking among the top five destinations for more than 60 groups defined by age and origin throughout the study.
