The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's earthquake analysis report for the megacity has revealed chilling details. The report shows that 20,000 buildings are on the verge of collapse. The locations of these buildings were listed district by district.
According to a report prepared by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), 40,000 buildings were inspected in Istanbul over six years. Half of the buildings were found to be at 'high' or 'very high' risk. Most of the risky buildings are located in Avcılar and Zeytinburnu.
Within the scope of the "Building Inspection Project with Rapid Screening Method" conducted by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), approximately 20,000 of the 40,000 buildings inspected in the last six years were determined to be in the high or very high risk category. In the evaluation conducted among the districts, Avcılar ranked first in the high risk rate, followed by Zeytinburnu.
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) determined that approximately half of the 40,000 buildings it examined based on citizen applications between 2020 and 2026 are in the high or very high risk group. The data particularly highlighted the building stock constructed before 1999.
IBB's July 2026 data once again revealed the building risk in Istanbul. In the study, which examined about 40,000 buildings, more than 18,800 of the structures turned out to be high or very high risk. Hunters and Zeytinburnu ranked first with their ratio of risky structures.
