A Leger poll finds 38% of Canadians say the country belongs primarily to Indigenous Peoples, with younger and left-leaning respondents more likely to agree, experts say.
- On Aug. 29, a Leger poll of 1,627 respondents for the Association for Canadian Studies found 38 per cent say Canada belongs “first and foremost” to Indigenous Peoples, while 43 per cent disagreed and 19 per cent were unsure.
- Amid the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Leger conducted the poll online between Aug. 29 and 31, while the Canadian Research Insights Council notes such surveys cannot have a margin of error.
- Younger Canadians aged 18 to 24 are the most likely to say Canada belongs to Indigenous peoples at 58 per cent, compared with 24 per cent of Canadians aged 65 and older.
- Veldon Coburn said, `All told, it is the younger generation and newcomers that are inheriting a relationship with the First Nations of these lands and the survey indicates that they desire justice and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples`,
- People on the 'left' of the ideological spectrum were more likely than those on the 'right' to say Canada belongs first and foremost to Indigenous Peoples, with regional patterns reflecting political sentiments.
