Former President Abdalá Bucaram, prosecuted for alleged organized crime in the Evidence Covid-19 case, announced that he will apply for medical discharge on Thursday, September 9, 2026 to attend the reading of his sentence. Subsequently, he assured that he will appeal to international bodies, including the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). Bucaram broadcast this Wednesday.
Former President Abdalá Bucaram published a letter on his social networks to say that he has requested discharge, that he is now sentenced for organized crime, and that he will go to the IACHR.
Abdalá Bucaram reported that he requested his medical discharge before a court hearing whose sentence would be between five and seven years in prison.
The COVID-19 Evidence Tribunal convened the sentencing hearing against Abdalá Bucaram by 17:00 on 9 September 2026.
