Minnesota Vikings Name Kyler Murray as Starting Quarterback over J.J. McCarthy
McCarthy has taken more first-team reps after a stronger week, while Kevin O'Connell said a decision date is already in mind.
The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly named veteran quarterback Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, setting him to lead the team against the Green Bay Packers on September 13.
Minnesota signed Murray on a one-year deal to provide stability after the 2025 season, when the team's quarterbacks combined for 17 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, and 60 sacks.
Throughout training camp, Murray received 73 first-team snaps compared to 38 for J.J. McCarthy, though head coach Kevin O'Connell maintained the competition remained active.
McCarthy, who posted "Havin fun" on Instagram, remains focused on development while the team prepares for its first preseason game this Saturday against the New York Giants.
With the regular season approaching, the Vikings hope Murray's veteran experience—87 career starts and 121 touchdowns—helps the team reach the playoffs after missing them last year with a 9-8 record.
The Minnesota Vikings are going into the upcoming NFL season with Kyle Murray as a new quarterback. J.J. McCarthy is officially moving into the second leg.
