Stolen Ambulance Chase Ends With Fatal DPS Shooting on I-35 in Austin
Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting after a stolen Fort Worth ambulance led troopers on a chase and injured one person, officials said.
On Thursday, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper fatally shot a suspect who stole a Fort Worth Fire/EMS ambulance and led law enforcement on a chase through Austin early that morning.
Officials say the ambulance was stolen early Thursday from Fort Worth Fire Station 4 on Old Mansfield Road, traveling almost 200 miles south on Interstate 35 through Williamson County.
Near U.S. Highway 290, the driver began "intentionally" ramming civilian vehicles; an attempted PIT maneuver failed before the fatal shooting occurred on the upper deck of I-35.
The Austin Police Department reported one person sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a crash, and authorities closed I-35 from U.S. 183 into downtown Austin for several hours.
Texas Rangers are actively investigating the officer-involved shooting while the suspect's identity remains unreleased; some I-35 lanes reopened Thursday afternoon.
