‘Invisible’ Asteroids Near Venus Could Devastate Earth
The universe is full of things that can kill us, but the most unsettling threats are the ones we can’t see. Astronomers say there may be hundreds of asteroids hiding near Venus that are all but invisible from Earth—objects big enough to cause city-level destruction if they ever stray into our path. A new study led by Valerio Carruba of São Paulo State University warns that these Venus “co-orbital” asteroids are practically blind spots. “Our stud…
In space shared by the orbit of Venus, hundreds of still undiscovered asteroids can be orbiting the Sun, hidden from our vision due only to its position. They will represent a threat to...
Hundreds of potentially dangerous asteroids currently escape our astronomical surveillance. Their particular positioning, in the orbital region shared with Venus, makes them virtually undetectable from the Earth. To observe them, terrestrial telescopes must point towards the Sun, which completely drowns the light reflected by these celestial bodies in the blinding sunlight. Valerio ... Brazilian astronomers have determined that the Earth could be threatened by a population of almost invisible and potentially dangerous asteroids. Although the risks remain low in the short term, this work shows the importance of developing new techniques for detecting and tracking these objects.
