A plane had to be stopped by a safety zone at the end of the runway at a Virginia airport

The engineered materials arresting system safely halted the United Express jet carrying 53 people after a runway overrun in heavy rain, with no injuries reported, FAA said.

  • On September 24, 2025 at 9:18 p.m., a United Airlines Embraer EMB-145XR operating as CommuteAir Flight 4339 from Washington Dulles overshot its landing at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport with 50 passengers and three crew aboard.
  • In heavy rain and marginal visibility, the plane landed long and lacked sufficient braking distance on the 5,810 feet runway, overrunning the northern end of runway 16-34.
  • Passengers deplaned onto the EMAS via portable stairs and were bused to the terminal by ROA and City Public Safety teams, while none of the 53 passengers and crew were injured.
  • All runways were closed temporarily, and one runway reopened after midnight while the affected runway remained closed; delays continued Thursday morning at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate the incident before determining a cause; this was the third save this month by an engineered materials arresting system , which has stopped 24 planes carrying 438 crew and passengers.
