Myanmar Military Strike Kills 14 People at a Buddhist Monastery, Opposition Group Says
On Friday at 9 a.m., a military airstrike struck a Buddhist monastery in Swel Le Oh, Myaung Township, about 45 miles west of Mandalay, killing 14 people and wounding 20, according to the Civil Defence and Security Organization of Myaung Township, or CDSOM.
The monastery was hosting a week-long meditation retreat for more than 100 people during Buddhist Lent when the airstrike occurred, transforming a spiritual gathering into a scene of tragedy.
A jet fighter dropped two bombs 15 minutes apart, with the second explosion damaging a house near the monastery, a resident reported to The Associated Press.
Survivors fled to a nearby community for safety after burying the victims, according to a resident who lost a relative in the strike.
Sagaing remains a region affected by fighting between Myanmar's military and opposition forces, where frequent aerial strikes continue to cause civilian casualties.
AP reported that 14 people were killed and 20 injured in an attack by a military aircraft on a Buddhist monastery in Myanmar's Sagaing region. Local sources said there were two attacks within 15 minutes of each other.
