A few of the Sisitun – Waĥpetun Dakota who settled here at Spirit Lake (Miniwakan Oyanke) were originally members of ‘Farmer Bands’ at their old Upper Agency, what is now Granite Falls, Minnesota. When war broke out in 1862, they fled mostly to Canada. In 1867 word finally reached them of the establishment of a new agency here at Spirit Lake.
