A classic Italian cookbook finally gets an English edition after years of effort
The English edition features nearly 1,700 preserved recipes from the 1959 Italian original, with only outdated etiquette and unworkable recipes removed, publisher Michael Szczerban said.
- This fall, Voracious, an imprint of Little, Brown and Company, published the first complete English edition of Ada Boni’s The Talisman of Happiness, copyrighted 2025 by Elwin Street.
- Szczerban began a long search after Samin Nosrat recommended the book and his love of Italy, seeking a full translation unlike earlier English attempts.
- Using the 1959 Italian edition as their model, editors tapped eight translators, preserving imprecise measurements and including recipes like Baked Wine Donuts while removing only unworkable dishes.
- The edition restores Ada Boni’s codified, regionally reflective dishes to English-speaking home cooks, and Lidia Bastianich, who wrote the forward, says it captures Italy’s culture, religion, topography and climate.
- Ada Boni’s book predated The Joy of Cooking and includes 10 gnocchi, 12 minestrones and 20 risottos, showing its breadth and influence on Italian home cooking.
