A Caribbean Court Rules that a US Extradition Process Against Guyana's Opposition Leader Can Resume
The court said the extradition fight can continue as U.S. authorities pursue gold smuggling and money laundering charges against Azruddin Mohamed and his father.
- On Wednesday, the Caribbean Court ruled that U.S. extradition proceedings against Guyana opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, can resume after they challenged the request in Trinidad.
- U.S. authorities indicted the Mohameds in Florida last year on allegations of smuggling more than 10,000 kilograms of gold and evading more than $50 million in taxes, though their defense argued some charges were not extraditable.
- The Treasury Department sanctioned the duo for selling gold to buyers in Miami, Dubai, and the United Arab Emirates, while Azruddin Mohamed leads the second-largest party in Guyana's Parliament and founded the We Invest in Nationhood Party.
- After the hearing, Nazar Mohamed told The Associated Press that "it is a 256-page judgement" and their attorneys are reviewing it, stating "Based on what lawyers say, all is not lost as yet. We will be fighting all the way."
- While the extradition process resumes, the U.S. maintains friendly relations with the administration of President Irfaan Ali as the South American nation experiences an economic boom driven by offshore oil deposits that Venezuela has long claimed.
