Turner’s Masterpiece of Rome Returns to City Ahead of U.K. Sale that Could Set a Record
The work still shows Turner’s fingerprints and brush hairs, and Sotheby’s expects it to fetch around £50 million.
- On Tuesday, the 1836 painting "Rome, From Mount Aventine" by William Turner went on public display at Palazzo Rondinini in Rome, ahead of its December 9 auction in London.
- British collector Hugh Andrew Johnstone Munro commissioned the work, which Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery, purchased in 1876 as a wedding gift for his wife, Hannah de Rothschild.
- Sotheby estimates the masterpiece at $66 million, noting the work remains on its original canvas and frame after 191 years, with traces of the artist's fingerprints still visible.
- The painting previously set a record for a Turner work when it sold for $47.6 million in 2014, ending the Rosebery family's ownership of more than 130 years.
- Following its display in Rome, the painting will travel to Hong Kong and New York, as Mario Tavella, chairman of Sotheby Europe, hopes it ends up in a public museum "where it could be admired by everyone.
