UK's July auto output falls as weak exports and shutdowns weigh, industry data shows
Electric and hybrid model output rose 6.8% to 25,678 units, but weaker overseas demand and maintenance shutdowns pushed overall production lower, the SMMT said.
- On Thursday, industry data showed British vehicle production fell 11.6% year-on-year in July to 63,655 units, as weaker exports and earlier summer maintenance shutdowns at some plants weighed on output.
- Weaker exports and earlier shutdowns compounded the decline, with overall British auto exports dropping 15.9% to 47,377 vehicles across all major markets including the European Union, China, and the United States.
- Manufacturing of fully electric and hybrid models rose 6.8% to 25,678 units—the first monthly increase of the year—while car production slipped 10.6% and commercial vehicle output plunged 34.4% to 1,888 units.
- SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said, "July's figures underline the intense pressure under which UK vehicle manufacturers are currently operating," citing global competition and weaker demand as compounding factors.
- Britain recently launched a review of zero-emission vehicle targets to ease pressure on manufacturers, while the industry urges the government to improve competitiveness through lower energy costs and trade safeguards.
