Prosecutors allege that mob hitman turned councilman in New Jersey has returned to crime
On Friday, New Jersey authorities arrested Englishtown councilman John Alite, a former mob hitman, on extortion and loan sharking charges that prosecutors allege reflect a return to his criminal past.
Alite previously testified against John Junior Gotti in 2009 during a trial that ended with a deadlocked jury; prosecutors now claim he recently obtained money from victims via threats of violence.
Court papers indicate Alite used Straightened-Out Entertainment Inc to conduct crimes, threatening one person with a baseball bat and bragging he had endeavored to "gut" people like "fish," according to authorities.
New Jersey State Police discovered weapons at his residence, including six baseball bats that investigators believe were intended for debt collection, with one bat stored near his front door.
Following a Saturday court appearance, Alite is scheduled to return for a detention hearing on Wednesday; his lawyer, Douglas Anton, declined to comment on the case.
