5 people injured in shooting with multiple shooters at Virginia State University

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, multiple suspects opened fire near the Quad Annexes at Virginia State University, wounding five people. One victim remains in critical condition while four others sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Following the shooting, Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff's Office. The campus lockdown was lifted at 8:20 a.m. Saturday.

Classes for the fall 2026 semester remain scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17, with residence halls already open for students. University officials hosted the 'New Trojans Experience' for incoming students on Friday, featuring NFL MVP Cam Newton as guest speaker.
Former director of distance education Arthur Fridrich said, 'To start a new year with this event is very tragic. It casts a shadow in the minds of all students.' The incident occurs as the historically Black university prepares for its academic year.
