Sudbury Boy, 8, Injured by Falling Tree in Wayland, Has Died

The camp will remain closed for the week as officials offer grief counseling to campers, families and staff after the accident.

  • On Tuesday, an 8-year-old boy from Sudbury died after a falling tree struck him at YMCA Camp Chickami in Wayland, Massachusetts. Police responded to the 139 Boston Post Road property around 10:40 a.m. following reports of the accident.
  • Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson described a 'domino effect' where a large tree took down another, striking the boy with a large branch. A camp counselor was hit by a smaller branch in the same incident.
  • First responders rushed the boy to Wayland Town Hall, where a medical helicopter transported him to Massachusetts General Hospital. The injured camp counselor was treated for minor injuries and released from a local hospital.
  • West Suburban YMCA CEO Jack Fucci stated the organization is "making grief counseling and other support resources available to camp staff, campers, and their families." Camp Chickami will remain closed for the rest of the week.
  • Trauma specialists will lead a virtual session on Thursday for parents on "how to have difficult conversations with your children about the recent tragic event that happened." A similar tree-related death occurred earlier this year in Melrose at an elementary school playground.
