Rubio says US is hopeful 'Cuba will choose a different path'
Rubio said Washington is increasing pressure on Havana as a US oil blockade strains Cuba’s fuel supplies and blackouts.
On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Cuba that those believing they can "wait out" the administration will "learn the lesson the hard way" if they fail to change course.
Washington has maintained an embargo on Cuba for more than 60 years, while a US-imposed oil blockade implemented earlier this year has exacerbated fuel shortages and failing infrastructure.
The administration explicitly seeks to change Cuba's communist government, though Trump predicted over the weekend the two nations would reach an agreement without requiring "military action."
Addressing the General Assembly on Saturday, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stated that Cuba remains "open for dialogue" with Washington.
Rubio also emphasized the need for "free and fair elections" in Venezuela, noting that Washington is working to establish conditions for such democratic processes as soon as possible.
