Six Missing After Boat Capsizes in Yamuna in U.P.’s Hamirpur; Search Underway
Three people were rescued and search teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force are deployed for the missing, police said.
On Wednesday evening, a boat carrying nine people capsized in the Yamuna River in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, leaving six individuals missing while three were rescued.
The group was returning from a river island around 7 p.m. when the vessel lost control; the surviving boatman, Dheeru, reported that the boat "didn't capsize but submerged on its own."
Missing individuals include one woman, Brijrani, and five children aged between 5 and 15 years; teams from the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force remain deployed for rescue.
Hamirpur District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal arrived Wednesday night to coordinate efforts, while Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Manoj Prajapati stated the government is "continuously monitoring the situation."
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed senior officials to personally monitor rescue operations and provide assistance to affected families, while the administration will investigate the accident's cause and implement preventive measures.
In Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, the joy of a wedding turned into mourning when a boat carrying relatives capsized in the Yamuna River. Three of the nine people on board were rescued. The bodies of a woman and a child have been recovered. Four children are still missing. The tragedy erupted in cries from family members on the riverbank. Rescue teams are continuing their search operation.
