5-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Left in Hot Car, Garland Police Say
Police said the child was found unresponsive after family members searched for her, and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
On Tuesday, a 5-year-old girl died after being left inside a vehicle outside a Garland residence, with Garland Police Department officers responding to the medical emergency on Redbird Drive at 8:20 p.m.
Investigators learned an adult family member returned home from school with the children, inadvertently leaving the 5-year-old inside the vehicle while searching the area for her.
Family members discovered the child unresponsive, initiated CPR, and called 911 for help; first responders then took over lifesaving efforts and transported her to a nearby hospital.
The Garland Police Department is working with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office to determine criminal responsibility. "At this time, no charges have been filed," Officer Matt Pesta said.
Amber Rollins, Executive Director of Kids and Car Safety, noted that such tragedies can occur at any age, though most children unknowingly left in vehicles are age three and under.
