The 49ers Lose Another Defensive Tackle to Injury with C.J. West Going on IR
San Francisco added Naquan Jones and practice-squad receiver Brandin Cooks as injuries thinned the defensive line and receiving corps.
On Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers placed defensive tackle C.J. West on injured reserve with a knee injury requiring surgery. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed West has a bone chip in his knee but expects him to return later this season.
San Francisco signed defensive lineman Naquan Jones to a one-year deal while adding wide receiver Brandin Cooks and defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko Jr. to the practice squad. The team released cornerback Jakob Robinson to make roster space.
Several key starters will rest Wednesday, including defensive end Nick Bosa, while wide receiver Mike Evans manages a hip injury, defensive lineman James Thompson Jr. deals with a high ankle sprain, and defensive end Romello Height recovers from hand surgery.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan is carefully managing the injured reserve list due to strict activation limits in the regular season. Linebacker Fred Warner noted the defense continues adjusting to new coordinator Raheem Morris' schemes during this stretch.
Despite these personnel losses, San Francisco maintains a 2-0 start heading into Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals. Veteran receiver Brandin Cooks expressed admiration for Shanahan's offensive system, saying he has long appreciated the coach's ability to create open receivers.
