Nearly 50,000 Chrysler Vehicles Recalled over Seat Belt Safety Defect
FCA US said the rear outboard seat belt retractors will be replaced free after 484 warranty claims linked the defect to a design weakness.
FCA US recalled 48,777 Dodge Hornet and Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles after discovering a design weakness in rear outboard seat belts that may twist and fail to retract properly.
Stellantis Europe, parent company of FCA US, began investigating the seat belt defect in May, tracing the issue to parts manufactured by Autoliv ASP, Inc. in southeast Michigan.
FCA reported 484 warranty claims connected to the defect, though no accidents or injuries occurred. The company stated that non-retracting belts "do not provide the designed occupant restraint function," increasing crash injury risks.
Beginning Sept. 24, FCA will notify owners about the free repair process. The company will replace rear outboard seat belt retractors at no cost for all affected vehicles.
The recall breakdown shows 40,386 Dodge Hornet models and 8,391 Alfa Romeo Tonale vehicles affected. Both are tracked in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database for consumer verification.
