36 years later, daughters of Arizona cold-case murder victim found alive
Two daughters abandoned as infants after their mother’s 1989 murder were identified through DNA testing nearly 36 years later, police said.
- On Aug. 27, 2025, detectives identified a woman with a high DNA match to the Ramos family, locating Marina Ramos' two missing daughters, Elizabeth and Jasmin Ramos, nearly 36 years after her 1989 murder.
- On Dec. 12, 1989, Marina Ramos was found naked with multiple stab wounds in Mohave County, about 50 miles south of Las Vegas; her daughters, 14 months and 2 months old, were abandoned in an Oxnard park restroom two days later.
- In February 2022 the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Unit resubmitted fingerprints to NamUs and the FBI, matching an alias, Maria Ortiz, while forensic genetic genealogy and DNA testing this year verified Elizabeth and Jasmin Ramos.
- The two women had been placed into foster care and adopted by a California couple, but the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said the homicide probe remains open with no arrests to date.
- Since 2023, SIU outreach used press releases, social media, and broadcast appeals while investigators reviewed newspaper clippings and photos to confirm details.
