Authorities say 4 people were charged after agents found illegal drugs and firearms at two properties where many dogs showed severe abuse.
On April 28, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division rescued 34 dogs from two residential properties in Chesterfield County during a search and seizure operation, uncovering animals tethered on heavy chains in dire physical condition.
Dogfighting is a felony in South Carolina punishable by up to five years in prison, as the practice causes severe and often fatal injuries including deep puncture wounds and broken bones.
The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office confirmed four individuals face charges, including a former sheriff's deputy who was terminated after investigators discovered illegal drugs and firearms at the properties.
Janell Gregory, South Carolina state director at Humane World for Animals, said the rescue offered hope to dogs bearing "scars covering their bodies" as responders provided veterinary triage and safe relocation.
SLED Chief Mark Keel emphasized that "dogfighting will not be tolerated in South Carolina," noting the agency has rescued approximately 120 dogs from nine properties recently while working with partners to seek justice.
