Thirty years have passed since the Japanese and US governments announced that they would fully return Futenma Air Base in Ginowan City within five to seven years. From my perspective, having covered this issue extensively, I'm wondering why the return hasn't materialized even after 30 years. The return of Futenma was triggered by the growing anger of Okinawan residents following an assault incident involving US soldiers in September 1995.
