30 years on, 'Tomb Raider' reboot sees Lara Croft through a 'modern lens'
At Gamescom 2026, Crystal Dynamics showcased a 20-minute demo of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a remake of the original 1996 title scheduled for February 12, 2027, narrated by experience director Jeff Adams.
The Tomb Raider series lost its lustre over time, prompting a 2013 restart with the 'Survivor' trilogy; eight years after 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider,' director Raul Siqueira said the new game revisits the original 'through a modern lens' with the experienced Lara from Survivor.
Level design has physically expanded with modern capabilities, featuring significantly larger areas than originals; new mechanics include a scanner for puzzle hints, a grapple for traversal, and the Deadeye skill for precision shots, while enemies like the leopard exhibit advanced hiding tactics.
Art director Arek Tomaszewski stated the team prioritized making Lara powerful and respectful of her character, with director Raul Siqueira explaining that dialogue was adapted while the core story remained unchanged.
The demo delivered gameplay familiar to post-reboot Tomb Raider games yet substantially richer than the original Core Design games, accounting for how 2026 audiences accustomed to modern controls would struggle with the 1996 version.
