Atlanta Chosen to Start 2028 Olympic Torch Relay
The relay will feature thousands of torchbearers and festival stops as organizers aim to make the 2028 Games feel like “America’s Games.”
LA28 organizers announced Tuesday that the 2028 Olympic torch relay will begin in Atlanta before traveling through all 50 states, culminating at the July 14, 2028, opening ceremony in Los Angeles.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the city is proud to welcome the Olympic flame back 32 years after hosting the centennial Summer Games in 1996, when Muhammad Ali lit the cauldron.
LA28 chair and president Casey Wasserman plans to carry the torch through small towns, calling upon thousands of torchbearers to share the honor across the country.
With less than two years until the Games, Wasserman admitted there is 'angst' regarding the delivery phase as the committee secures millions in funding for transportation.
Organizers will announce the full relay route in 2027, with the torch traveling through Greece before reaching the U.S. in spring 2028 ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics.
