2027 Hyundai Santa Fe: Extended-range EV announced
Hyundai says the three-row SUV will use dual electric motors and a smaller battery, with production planned in the United States.
- At the 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, Hyundai CEO José Muñoz confirmed a Santa Fe EREV for North America, targeting a 600-mile range with production launching in the first half of 2027.
- Extended-Range electric vehicles utilize smaller battery packs than traditional EVs, with an internal-combustion engine acting as a generator to extend range. This technology serves as a bridge to full electrification, addressing consumer range anxiety.
- Genesis will introduce a GV70 EREV in early 2027 with a maximum range of more than 640 miles, featuring new proprietary batteries with Mid-nickel NCM chemistry. These cells maintain power output despite half the capacity of typical EV batteries.
- Manufacturing for the Santa Fe will occur at Hyundai's Alabama facility, supporting the company's strategy to launch more than 10 hybrid models by 2030. These hybrids are projected to account for about half of all North American sales.
- Other automakers are pursuing similar technology: Stellantis is developing an EREV for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Ram 1500 REV, while Scout is exploring EREV options for its Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck.
