Voters Choose Nominees for State, Federal Elections
Democrats and Republicans picked nominees in contested statewide races, with Amanda Janoo and Molly Gray advancing as Vermont’s governor and lieutenant governor candidates.
On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Vermont voters cast ballots in statewide and local primary elections to select party nominees for November. Polling stations across the state remained open until 7 p.m. to accommodate participation.
Many participants described the primary process as fundamental civic duty, emphasizing that primaries often decide outcomes before November. Residents stressed the importance of voting to shape local leadership and community direction.
Democratic voters selected Amanda Janoo for governor, Tim Ashe for state auditor, and Molly Gray for lieutenant governor. Democrats also chose Nikhil Goyal, Martine Gulick, and Tanya Vyhovsky for the three-seat Chittenden-Central district.
November matchups are now set: Amanda Janoo will challenge Republican Governor Phil Scott, while Tim Ashe faces Republican H. Brooke Paige. Republican Gerald Malloy will compete against incumbent Democratic Representative Becca Balint for the congressional seat.
Election volunteer Jay Lambert, who has worked the polls for 12 years, facilitated the democratic process at the Winooski Senior Center. Officials will continue updating results as residents prepare for the general election scheduled for November 3, 2026.
