2 wildfires burn along California’s scenic Big Sur coast
Fire crews used aircraft and back-burning as the Plaskett Fire grew to 140 acres and threatened structures near Big Sur, officials said.
Two wildfires, the Plaskett Fire and the Timber Fire, are burning along California's Big Sur coast near Highway 1 in Monterey County.
The Timber Fire has burned nearly 20,000 acres with about 21% containment, threatening over 660 structures, while the Plaskett Fire has grown rapidly to 140 acres and is 0% contained.
Evacuation orders and closures on Highway 1 have been issued, affecting residents and prompting traffic controls for tactical operations.
Fire officials are conducting firefighting efforts including water-dropping aircraft and back-burning operations, while investigating the causes amid difficult terrain and hot, dry conditions.
