2 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers workers among 8 killed in small plane crash in Alaska
Federal investigators are probing the cause after a civilian-contracted Cessna 441 crashed, killing two Army Corps employees and six others.
On Thursday, a civilian-contracted plane crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site in Alaska, killing all eight people aboard. The Corps confirmed two of its employees were among the dead.
The twin-engine Cessna 441 departed from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport headed to the remote station near the Bering Sea. Due to its location, the site is only accessible by plane or barge.
Two pilots and six passengers were on board, according to the Associated Press. The crash occurred near the Cape Newenham Airport, an Air Force airstrip near the Bering Sea.
"Dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment," Air Force Gen. Robert Davis said of those on board. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
Next of kin have been notified, and additional information will be released "as it becomes available and is appropriate to share," the agency said. The military typically waits 24 hours before releasing victims' names.
