Philippine officials say 2 Americans among suspected communist rebels killed in clash with troops
Human rights groups called for an independent probe after the army said 24 firearms were seized and a rebel commander with a 1 million peso bounty was killed.
Philippine troops killed 19 suspected New People guerrillas in Toboso, Negros Occidental, including two Americans identified as Lyle Prijoles and Kai Dana-Rene Sorem.
The National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict warned Americans against joining left-wing groups, describing the recruitment process as "terror-grooming," while both the United States and the Philippines designate the insurgent group as a terrorist organization.
During the encounter, Army troops seized 24 firearms and killed a rebel commander with a 1 million pesos bounty; security officials estimate the insurgent force has declined from 25,000 fighters to below 900.
They are said to have come to the country just a few weeks before: two Americans apparently joined a Communist militia in the Philippines, who died in one of Asia's oldest active conflicts.
