16-year-old Mathis Albert becomes youngest American to play in Bundesliga
The 16-year-old replaced Gio Reyna and Christian Pulisic as the youngest American to appear in the Bundesliga after a late cameo in a 4-0 win.
On Sunday, Mathis Albert became the youngest American to play in the Bundesliga, debuting for Borussia Dortmund at 16 years, 11 months and 5 days old.
Albert surpassed the record set by Giovanni Reyna on January 18, 2020, when Reyna was 17 years, 2 months and 5 days old; Christian Pulisic held the previous mark at 17 years, 4 months and 12 days.
Originally from Greenville, South Carolina, Albert joined the Dortmund academy from the LA Galaxy youth program in 2024 and represented the U.S. team at last year's Under-17 World Cup.
Albert entered the match in the 88th minute during Dortmund's 4-0 German league victory over Freiburg, marking his first competitive appearance.
Dortmund qualified for next season's Champions League following the decisive victory, securing a spot in the prestigious European competition.
