15-year-old rescued after clinging to capsized boat for days in Alaska’s Bering Sea
The Coast Guard said the boy had symptoms of hypothermia after clinging to the overturned skiff for nearly three days.
- On Monday, the United States Coast Guard rescued a 15-year-old boy clinging to an overturned 18-foot vessel approximately four miles east of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, after days adrift in frigid waters.
- The fishing vessel departed Savoonga on Friday and was due back early Sunday; weather conditions prevented the Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew from launching their search until Monday morning.
- Captain Adam White of the Northwest Explorer reported the water was 10 degrees Celsius when his crew spotted the teen four miles from St. Lawrence Island and hauled him aboard.
- The teen's brother and cousin died during the incident; rescuers transported the survivor, who exhibited hypothermia symptoms, to Nome for medical treatment.
