15 injured after a San Francisco cable car stops suddenly

Fifteen passengers were injured, two with moderate trauma, after a cable car abruptly stopped on California Street; investigation by SFFD and police is ongoing.

  • Passengers on a cable car were hurt Monday after it abruptly stopped at 1351 California Street between Leavenworth and Hyde in Nob Hill, injuring fifteen people.
  • The SFMTA said it is actively investigating the sudden stop and offered no immediate explanation; on-scene investigators said the cause remains unclear and it was not due to a collision.
  • Medical teams treated passengers on scene, with two people with minor trauma or more urgent injuries, eleven people transported to hospitals, and two individuals who declined transport, the San Francisco Fire Department said.
  • SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato said the car will be taken out of service and inspected, the 1-California bus will cover the route, and officials secured the scene with investigation ongoing.
  • San Francisco's historic cable cars, a National Historic Landmark, have a partly open-air design without seat belts, and SKY7 aerial video and NBC Bay Area footage showed shattered glass and live coverage of the stopped car.
