Report: 15 chemical-spraying drones stolen in New Jersey; FBI investigating potential risks
On Monday, New Jersey State Police recovered 15 stolen agricultural drones at a warehouse in Dover, NJ, more than a month after their March 24 theft from CAC International in Harrison.
An individual posing as a delivery driver orchestrated the theft using a phony bill of lading and fake confirmation email to deceive CAC International, executing what investigators described as a highly sophisticated, coordinated operation.
The FBI investigated the incident as a 'potential nightmare scenario,' citing the drones' GPS-guided capabilities and their ability to carry up to 40 gallons of liquid. Experts warned the industrial sprayers could be repurposed to disperse biological or chemical agents.
Federal investigators, including Homeland Security Investigations, assisted the probe as the drones sat at the Dover facility until workers contacted police. The recovered fleet was valued at up to $870,000.
The incident reignited discussions regarding the lack of detection layers protecting critical infrastructure from weaponized commercial drones. Experts emphasize the need for Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems to counter low-cost, one-way attack platforms.
