Woman fatally shot by police after mental-health call in SE Calgary

Police say the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a welfare check ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting.

  • On Wednesday, a woman died following an officer-involved shooting during a Calgary Police Service welfare check in the 200 block of Legacy Circle in southeast Calgary.
  • Officers arrived around 1:30 a.m. for the welfare check, but the situation escalated when a gas meter ruptured during the confrontation, forcing nearby residents to evacuate the Legacy area.
  • Approximately one hour later, the woman exited the home with a weapon; police fired a non-lethal round before another officer discharged a service weapon, hitting the woman at the scene.
  • The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has launched an investigation as is standard for officer-involved shootings, while one officer was transported to hospital for precautionary measures due to gas exposure.
  • CPS Chief Katie McLellan described the incident as part of a "string of concerning events," noting Calgary officers respond to eight firearm situations daily and calling this a "new normal.
