Pilot, co-pilot killed after Air Canada plane and vehicle collide at New York's La Guardia Airport
The Air Canada Express CRJ-900 struck a Port Authority firetruck at about 24 mph while landing, killing both pilots and injuring others, causing LaGuardia Airport to close.
- Late Sunday, an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation struck a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey vehicle while landing at LaGuardia, killing the pilot and co-pilot.
- Port Authority officials said the ARFF vehicle was responding to a separate incident when it crossed Runway 4 and was struck by the jet rolling down the runway, FlightRadar24 reported.
- Images from the scene show severe damage to the nose and cockpit, FlightRadar24 recorded the impact speed at about 39 km/h, and a preliminary manifest listed 72 passengers and four crew.
- The Federal Aviation Administration ordered a ground stop and said the airport will likely stay closed until 2pm on March 23, with 18 diverted flights and 13 people hospitalised including 11 passengers and two first responders.
- The incident comes amid a series of recent ground-safety incidents, as investigations by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, FAA, and NTSB assess safety at LaGuardia Airport, which served over 30 million passengers last year.
