Argentina economic activity dips 1.4% in July
Eight of 15 sectors posted declines, led by wholesale and retail trade and manufacturing, while fishing and mining helped offset some losses, INDEC said.
- On Thursday, Argentina's official statistics agency INDEC reported economic activity fell 1.4% in July compared with the same month last year, following the 2.7% rise recorded in June.
- Among 15 tracked sectors, the EMAE measurement has alternated between rises and falls in recent months, with eight recording year-on-year declines led by wholesale, retail trade, and repairs at 5.1% and manufacturing at 4.6%.
- Seasonally adjusted economic activity fell 2.9% in July from the previous month, marking the largest monthly decline since the Covid-19 pandemic for Latin America's third-largest economy.
- Facundo Beltramone, economist at the Libertad think tank, said the data "shows a sign of weakness at the margin," noting exports fell 4.9% and imports 4.5% from the previous month.
- Javier Milei's government has cut public spending to curb inflation while the Central Bank forecasts 2.1% growth this year, followed by 2.9% expansion next year despite recent volatility.
